About the Illinois SOS written test
The Illinois knowledge test (often searched as the Illinois permit test or Illinois DMV test) checks that new drivers understand road signs, traffic laws and safe driving habits before getting a learner's permit. The questions come from the official Illinois driver handbook published by the Illinois Secretary of State.
Illinois uses a graduated licensing path for teens: an instruction permit at 15, a graduated license at 16 after at least 9 months on the permit, and a full license at 18. Applicants pass vision and knowledge tests, and the Illinois Rules of the Road manual from the Secretary of State is the study source.
Illinois permit test quick facts
- Minimum permit age
- You can get an Illinois instruction permit at 15 with a parent's consent, an approved driver education course, and passed vision and knowledge tests.
- Adult BAC limit
- 0.08% is the DUI limit for adults; drivers under 21 face zero tolerance (any alcohol, BAC of .01 or greater).
Rules and fees change. Confirm current details with the Illinois Secretary of State before you test.
What Illinois drivers should know
- Teens need at least 50 hours of supervised practice, including 10 hours at night.
- The permit must be held at least 9 months before a graduated license at 16 or older.
- Under-18 drivers: no driving 11 p.m.-6 a.m. Fri/Sat nights or 10 p.m.-6 a.m. Sunday-Thursday nights (with exceptions).
- Drivers under 19 with a permit or graduated license may use a phone only to call emergency services.
- Zero tolerance: any alcohol for a driver under 21 brings a 3-month suspension if the test is taken.
